Lithuania was occupied by USSR from 1940 to 1990. On March 11, 1990, the Supreme Council of Lithuania declared the restoration of the independent Republic of Lithuania. Soviet postage stamps, postmarks, postage labels, postage forms and meter marks were soon replaced at the post office. Initially, USSR postage stamps were used, later mixed frankings was possible, and from January 1,1992, only Lithuanian postage stamps were used. All types of USSR postmarks were initially used. Later, altered USSR and provisional postmarks were used. Even later, only postmarks made by the Lithuanian Post were used.

The exhibit is not intended to display all postage stamps, postal stationery or special postmarks. Only a few of the most interesting examples are included to illustrate the postal activity of that period.
