Alytus county (Alytaus apskritis) is located in southern Lithuania with its capital city of Alytus. During the interwar period (1918-1940), Alytus county was one of 23 counties in Lithuania with a population of 120,000 and 30 post offices. However, due to the remote geographical location or other unknown reasons, postmarks from this area are difficult to find. This exhibit shows circular postmarks used in Alytus county between 1920 and 1941, including a previously unrecorded postmark used in the city of Alytus between 1921 and 1922.
